1979ish: Sunday morning newspaper train empties....
73130 at Sittingbourne, in the Down Goods Loop (still electrified in those days) during the regular Sunday morning 'sort out the newspaper empties' extravaganza of that era.
I hadn't recorded the date, but this would most likely have been in 1979. The newspaper train workings around the country were quite complex, and provided a great deal of work for railwaymen at many levels. The workings on Saturday night / Sunday morning were very different to those of other nights in the week.
The working in the photograph was 5G09 0830 (SUN) Ramsgate - Bricklayers Arms, which attached at Margate 0840-0900, Faversham 0935-1015, and Sittingbourne 1026-1046, from where it was booked via Sole Street to Hither Green 11aC49, and arriving Bricklayers Arms at 1200.
The vans it conveyed from Ramsgate and Margate were off 1S00 0409 (SUN) Victoria - Ramsgate (via Herne Hill and Sole Street) which detached a portion at Faversham to form 1S01 0525 (SUN) Faversham - Deal (running round at Dover Priory), the empties off which went on to Ramsgate from Deal to become part of this 5G09.
The vans which 5G09 attached at Sittingbourne were off 5D06 0610 (SUN) Sheerness - Sittingbourne which arrived at 0627. The Sheerness vans were off 1S02 0412 (SUN) Victoria - Sheerness, which detached a portion at Rochester at 0502 to form 1K01 0511 (SUN) Rochester - Maidstone West which ran round at Strood (and was booked a Cl.33).
There was also a 1U00 0425 (SUN) Victoria - Dover Priory (via Sidcup, first stop Crayford), which detached vans at Faversham (for attachment to 5G09 later). At Dover, these vans were returned to Bricklayers Arms via Ashford, with other vehicles off the 'south eastern side' newspaper services.
I wasn't initially sure whether to post this and other similar 'late 1970s' shots I have because of the low quality and high grain content, or whether the 'historical' factor makes it of sufficient interest, but I decided to post them anyway.
