The Roosevelt cottage was the first true home of newlyweds, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. in the early 1800's and remained a summer retreat for members of the Roosevelt family until 1951 when it was purchased by Dr. Armanod Hammer who, with the help of his mother Rose and his brothers Harry and Victor carefully restored and presented the cottage to reflect the character of President Roosevelt's youth. In 1963 Dr. Hammer agreed to donate the Cottage and the adjoining ten acres of land for use as a International Park and memorial to President Roosevelt. Mrs. Frances Barrett Hammer, wife of Armand Hammer was appointed by President Reagan as a member of the Roosevelt Campebello Inernational Park Commission, which administers the Park, and served with distiaction from October, 1935 until her death in December 1989. In a formal resoulution of appreciation and remembrance, the Commisiion stated: "Mrs Hammer was able to serve only too briefly asa representative of special appreciation for the hertage and history of Campabello. she came to know and love the Roosevelt Cottage long before her official affiliation with the Park when her husband owned and maintained this historic home with members of the Hammer family. The commission especially remembers her participation in the Armand Hammer confernece on Peace and Human Rights of Campobello and her many efforts on behalf of Armand and cultural needs througout the world as she accompanied her husband.

Dr Armand Hammer, on his global missions for peace, She is sorely missed by those who had the privilege of working with her on the Commission. The Hammer name will forever occupy a special place in the annals of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park.
