A well of sky

Looking up from the inside of a gouffre.

A gouffre is like a vertical cave with its mouth open to the sky. A pothole or 'igue' can open out into a chamber, which in turn might collapse into a gouffre. This gouffre is in the commune of Caylus just outside of the hamlet of La Nauze. Once opened, the gouffre often exposes concretions to day light. A thought provoking natural phenomena that will have been measured by local and passing men throughout history and prehistory.

The iris of the eye can read between the different intensities of light and shade - seeing detail in most of the gouffre's directions. With this picture, I have used a HDR effect to bring together several exposures under one frame.

Taken with a 27mm focal length.
