50046 Ajax. London Paddington. 28th March 1988

So the story continues (please see previous photo).

Having kicked my heels in the London area for most of the day, I was determined not to leave with a mere 36 miles of haulage for the day. I stood at the Paddington platform end as I knew she would bring ECS from Old Oak into the station for the 18.16 Twyford commuter. After shunt release she would then work the 18.32 to Oxford. Oxford here I come!

Alas it was not to be. The driver failed Ajax prior to departure and she was unhooked and made off to Old Oak with her vac pipe between her buffers.

Thankfully I had many more trips behind Ajax but as the last of the class for haulage this was a disappointing day for me, and she remained one of the lower mileage examples in my haulage book.

Gone but not forgotten!
