Gary D. Ellis AHS Ames High School class of 1958

1940-2019

 

Ankeny - Gary D. Ellis, 79, passed away on November 3rd 2019 at Bridges at Ankeny. He was born in Ames, Iowa, to Alva Ellis and Thelma (Kitchen) Ellis on August 9, 1940. Gary was a graduate of Ames High School and Iowa State University where he played baseball and football from 1959-1962.

 

After graduation from Iowa State, Gary taught and coached at North Polk and Dowling. He returned to Iowa State as Assistant Director of the National Cyclone Club and Ticket Manager. Gary then began a 30 year banking career.

 

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judy (Warren) Ellis; son, Gary Jr. (Diane); daughters, Cammie Callen (Mark), and Tracy Marquardt (Mike); six grandchildren, Emily Ellis, Abby and Adam Callen, Anna, Caleb and Billy Marquardt; five nieces and one nephew.

 

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Elsie and Hugh Griffith; and brother Robert Ellis.

 

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, December 22nd from 1:00 - 3:00 at Briarwood Golf Club in Ankeny. Memorials may be directed to the Ames High School Alumni Association or Every Step Hospice.

James William Dresser AHS Ames High School class of 1958

1940 - 2020

 

Ames - James William Dresser, 80, of Ames, Iowa, passed away at Rolling Green Village in Nevada, Iowa on Friday, September 25, 2020. A gathering of friends and family for burial and a graveside service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on October 2, 2020, in the Graceland Section of the Ames Municipal Cemetery, 310 E. 9th Street, Ames, Iowa. Face masks, social distancing and lawn chairs are encouraged if attending.

 

Jim was born in Keokuk, Iowa on July 25, 1940 to Lloyd and Lorraine (Foley) Dresser. He was a graduate of Ames High School and Iowa State University. Jim was awarded varsity letters in four sports while in high school and varsity track at Iowa State. He was honored by being elected into Ames High's Athletic Hall of Fame. Jim was an educator for 45 plus years and coached many different sports.

 

Left to cherish Jim's memory are his sister-in-law, Carol Dresser; brother-in-law, Larry Taylor; nephew, Nate (Kerri) Taylor; nieces, Stacie (Shawn) Lawler and Megan (Mike) Colvin.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Taylor and brother, David Dresser.

Elsie Rita (Clouser) Grove

1939-2020

 

Elsie Rita (Clouser) Grove, 80, of West Des Moines, formerly of Manning, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020 at MercyOne Hospice House in Johnston.

 

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, Oct. 11 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Grand Junction in West Des Moines. A private, family burial will be at a later date.

 

Cremation services are under the direction of Merle Hay Funeral Home of Des Moines. Condolences can be left at www.merlehayfuneralhome.com.

 

Elsie was born Oct. 6, 1939 in Ames, Iowa to Henry and Ellen (Johnson) Clouser. She grew up in Ames, graduating from Ames High School in 1958. She worked for nearly 20 years with the Commission for the Blind in Des Moines before moving to Denver, Colo. where she worked in the administrative offices at Denver University. Elsie was never one to be idle and continued working into her retirement, assisting at the West Des Moines H & R Block during tax season. In the entirety of her 80 years, Elsie never met anyone who stayed a stranger for long. She was a gregarious soul whose life was enriched by the friendships she cultivated wherever she traveled.

 

On May 30, 1958, Elsie was united in marriage to Ronald Arthur Grove in Des Moines. Three children were born to this union: Dennis, Dena and Daniel. In 1995 she married James A. Walsmith in Denver, Colo.

 

Left to celebrate Elsie’s life are her daughter, Dena Davis of West Des Moines, and son Daniel (Chantelle) Grove of Coon Rapids. Her grandchildren: Thomas Davis and Shannon Davis and fiancé Josh Hayes, all of Des Moines; and Zachary Grove of Beloit, Kan. Her step-grandchildren: Tyler (Laura) Hogrefe of Olathe, Kan. and Colin (Michele) Hogrefe of Linn Grove. Her great-grandchildren: Riley and Patrick Emery; Bryson Davis; Everett and Finn Hogrefe; and Cael and Brandt Hogrefe. Her brother, Gary Clouser of Nevada; sister-in-law, Gloria Clouser of Ames; and many beloved nieces and nephews and close family friends.

 

Elsie was preceded in death by her son, Dennis; her husband, James Walsmith; her parents; her brothers, Galen and Steven Clouser; and her sister, Helen May.
