JOINT AUC/ECA COM15: the Committee of Experts meets in Addis Ababa to Strategize on efficient Finance Mobilization for Development
Addis Ababa, 25th March 2015 – The Committee of Experts ahead of the eight joint annual meeting of the African Union (AU) Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning and Integration and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development commenced today, 25th March 2015 at the ECA Conference Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Addressing the opening ceremony, the Commissioner for Economic Affairs of the AU Dr. Anthony Mothae Maruping said “we are gathered here to explore all possible windows for the domestication of Agenda 2063 into the national, regional and continental development plans”.
Dr. Maruping called on the mobilization of all stakeholders and collective action to achieve the implementation of previous strategic frameworks in line with the AU Agenda 2063. He emphasized the need for social, structural transformation in order to realize the aspiration of African citizens towards achievement of Agenda 2063. He also underlined the need for Africans to recognize that the Africa Agenda cannot be implemented without the efficient and effective financing to support the social, economic and infrastructural sectors.
Dr.Mothae said the meeting comes at a timely period ahead of the third International Conference on Financing for Economic Development which is scheduled in Doha. He therefore urged Africans to utilize this opportunity to ensure that Africa’s voice is heard.
Dr. Abdalla Hamdok, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in his opening remarks said that the event comes at a timely period as it provides the opportunity to engage in honest dialogue in order to emanate with concrete resolutions of how to gather necessary finances to create the way forward for the implementation of Agenda 2063.
Dr. Hamdok highlighted the need for concrete proposals on how to incorporate Agenda 2063 in the national frameworks. He reiterated that although Africa is the 2nd fastest growing region many people remain jobless due to the high level of inequality which hinders the competitiveness of the continent on the global domain.
In his conclusion,Dr. Abdalla commended the work of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) which has worked tirelessly with all partners to domesticate resource mobilization and has contributed towards reduction of illicit financial flows that leave the continent in economic stagnation.
