World Where You Live
UNBELIEVABLE!!! read description
In 250 dives around the world I have never seen this. Granted the photo evidence is poor, but I think if you look closely you'll see a barracuda 5 seconds after grabbing a hogfish (see previous photo). Just out of view to the left is the beginning of the reef which falls over a wall 20 feet to the left. I had just got to the bottom and was starting to set up the camera and wait for my wife to make the decent. A hogfish started to move away from me and I missed the strike, but a barracuda grabbed the fish by the tail. After a few seconds of the hogfish struggling, the barracuda took the prey to the surface 60 feet above. I was astounded, you never see this when you dive, I wanted to simultaneously take photos, clank my tank to get the attention of the other divers, and just started to think: what if the hogfish freed itself and tried to take cover between my legs - would the barracuda inadvertantly bite me?!?! Cut to the chase, barracuda bites of tail at surface, hogfish 'freefalls' to a nose dive 10 feet in front of me, wife is seeing this, barracuda slowly comes back to grab the hogfish and finishes him off 20 seconds later! WOW, this is a scene I'll be able to play back in my head for decades to come because it is very rare.
