Does a landscape image tell a story? I have been grappling with this concept lately because I think it can. Or rather, before snapping the shutter, I like to break it down into three steps. First, try to find something that is interesting. Second, think of a story to tell about that item. Third, utilize the elements of composition that best contribute to that narrative. Otherwise, what are you trying to convey?
Or perhaps it is like the Cheshire Cat who says "if you do not know where you are going, any road will get you there". Which is to say, if you continue to work hard, you will eventually succeed. Instead, why not plan the image, in place of "hoping" to find the road that leads to the final destination.
In this image, with the incredible clouds on the horizon, this sage appeared to be hiding in its own brush. Hence, a story or narrative to follow. That told me where to put my tripod, the height needed for the camera, and what lens to use. And finally, the elements needed in the shot.
