Flyfishing for cod
Soft lure fishing , Superlight gear on the kayak.
And yet another trip , with great weather and good wind condition we headed east once again . Fishing has been tremendous lately on our kayaks , and I thought it would be great to try new Technics . I decided to take no bait with me , fishing mostly soft lure on a light spinning rod and fly-fishing leaded sand eels . We headed out right early and the wind was pretty strong taking us at sea . Great to be taken effortlessly a mile out to sea but saying that we always have to paddle back . Fishing leaded sand eels on light spinning rod is brilliant . I would set up a drogue to slow my drift and then drop the lure to the bottom . Some areas are sandy ,flat and featureless so I would try to avoid them , you have rocky bottom , very snagy but great for holding fish and also kelp forest , probably the best area to fish . Species on the menu are cod , pollack , ling , scorpion fish . Fishing right on the bottom is best , I can feel the lead head touching the ground and I would slowly lift it . The hook facing upward is virtually weed free but any snag can be sorted paddling back . The takes are great , fish will bite the tail of the soft lure and you know you are about to get a hit . Fishing in the kelp areas are more tricky , pollack will dive straight back into the kelp and your chance to lift it is slim on light tackle . Using the fly rod is even more fun , once the fish takes , you must lift the rod right up and try to pull much line as you can . If you snag the fly rod , forget it , pull the line with your hand and hope for the best . On the day we had loads of fish , my pals feathering mackerels had also some great fun . We managed to stay afloat and teasing the cod on the fly rod was just brilliant ..Till next ..Tight lines guys..Nicolas
