Cork Oak in the Alentejo, Portugal (explored)

Onr of the reasons I really love the Alentejo region, is the cork oaks. Many of them stand as solitairy trees dotting the rolling countryside. In this case I happened upon someamazingly big trees on a little country lane. The light through the greenery was perfect and the olive trees in the background are a nice addition.

The Portuguese cork oak, the "sobreiro" is the national tree of Portugal and felling is prohibited. Due to the Mediterranean climate, cork oaks have always flourished naturally in Portugal, especially in the Alentejo region. Cork is one of Portugal's largest and most important export products. It currently has 730,000 ha. of cork oak forest (25% of the world) and it is the main world producer of cork with more than 100 thousand tons produced per year.
