Cabinet (1630) i

Paris

Ebony and other woods, tortoiseshell, ivory, oil paints on copper.

The strictly and geometrically designed corpus of this Parisian cabinet was decorated with rich carving and finely engraved ornament.

The interior contains a concealed great hall with the mythological lovers Venus and Mars at its center.

Unlike the freestanding ivory cabinets made at Augsburg, this cabinet-on-a-stand was positioned in front of a wall.

Bavarian State Museum, Munich.
