Twilight Milky Way and Light Pillars Panorama
The Milky Way arcs over old smokehouse buildings, the Campobello Bridge, and Mulholland Lighthouse as seen from the Lubec waterfront.
If you look close, on the left side of the frame you will see light pillars shooting up into the sky. These are lights from the nearby town of Eastport. The pillars are caused by “diamond dust”, tiny ice crystals in the air that reflect the light straight up. I had no idea it was happening until I was looking closely at the photos a little later into twilight, and by then it was too bright out to see the light pillars anymore, so I wasn’t able to get a closer inspection.
Shooting the night sky during twilight can sometimes make the exposure in a scene like this a lot easier to balance. The bright lights will be less intense and easier to deal with when the sky isn’t so dark. Plus I just love the blue sky you get during twilight.
Nikon Z 6, NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S lens @ 14mm, f/2.8, ISO 1600, 20 seconds for 10 shots stitched into a panorama.
