EL 2557; Conway, PA; May 1976

Early Conrail years were referred to as 'the rainbow years' because of the hodgepodge power that roamed the system. This scene from very early in Conrail's operations illustrates that. A freight train led by two unpatched Erie Lackawanna units rolls by WEST CONWAY Tower which guarded the west end of Conway Yards. Sitting below Route 65, this tower wasn't a very often photographed one. It met its demise in the late 80s when sparks from a rail grinder caught the tower on fire.
