Camden Road class 501 set 183 Broad Street train 300781

Class 501 EMU clatters over the Junction at Camden Road with a train for Broad Street on 30th July 1981. The No.1 lines are to the right and were predominately used for freight, the AC wiring used to connect the Freightliner depot at Maiden Lane with the WCML (via Primrose Hill). The No.2 lines (or electric lines) were electrified with DC third rail for the EMU service from Richmond to Broad Street. The link via Primrose Hill was electrified for AC and DC (third rail) operation and was used by Watford Jn to Broad Street services (usually peak only) until closure of Broad Street and Primrose Hill stations. Interestingly the new LOROL class 378s are sometimes diverted via Primrose Hill during engineering or incidents forming passenger services from Willesden Low Level to Stratford. The former NLR signalbox was closed in recent years and control transferred to Upminster IECC. Photo: Ivan Stewart Collection.
