How/Where do you even start building your large creations?
Research is essential to get reference pics of the scene and the details that would go into the build. Then a small iconic part/scene is picked to get the base concept going and even though it's already been built in my mind (scary thought!), a proof of concept (prototype) is definitely required to see how the pieces fit.
All necessary parts are gathered from the stock inventory (this is where sorting parts before hand helps tremendously). Start building based from the reference pics for the initial prototype and the primary object is not to have the final version yet. Rather get the main structure/components done and then finish up the details later.
