Postcards for the Lunch Bag - Black Jaguar
My story to make this fit Inktober prompts: #Inktober2018 Prompt breakable #doodlewashOctober2018 prompt cats:
In all of the Americas, Jaguar is the lord of cats, none larger, none wiser, and none more majestic. But Jaguar's flaw was pride and he boasted of this so often, annoying the other animals, even though they feared him.
Of all the animals, Jaguar was greatest enemy to Monkey, and Monkey decided to teach Jaguar a lesson.
From tree to tree, the message was passed from the jungles of South America to the Atlantic Ocean, where Monkey called upon Otter. "Otter, will you take this message to our brothers across the sea? It will cause great mischief to Jaguar."
Otter also hated Jaguar and loved mischief, so he agreed.
"Tell our brothers to go to Lion and tell him that Jaguar boasts that he is largest, wisest and most majestic of all cats."
The message went to Monkey in Africa and soon Lion knew of Jaguar's boasting. Lion was outraged, so he traveled through the mystic ways known only to lions until he reached America and stood before Jaguar.
"Jaguar, you have been telling lies. Say that Lion is larger and wiser and more majestic or I will break your bones!"
Jaguar's pride was bigger than his wisdom and he refused. So Lion used his great strength to break Jaguar's bones. However, Jaguar's pride was stronger than his bones, and he continued to boast that he was largest, wisest and most majestic, even though he knew at least part of this was not true.
Monkey once again called upon Otter and sent their message to India, asking their brothers to tell Tiger of Jaguar's boasting.
Tiger traveled through the mystic ways known only to tigers until he reached America and stood before Jaguar. "Jaguar, I AM the largest, the wisest and most majestic of all cats! And I am the wisest because I know your pride is stronger than your bones. You will say that I am largest, wisest and most majestic!" With that he pounced upon Jaguar and grabbed him by the nape of the neck as a mother cat does her kittens.
Jaguar thought Tiger would grow weary and let him go, so he did not speak. A day passed, and then a night and another day and both Tiger and Jaguar grew hungry and weary. But Jaguar did not speak and Tiger did not let go.
Another day and another night passed and another day passed, and Jaguar and Tiger grew thirsty and thin. But Jaguar did not speak and Tiger did not let go.
And still another day, another night and another day passed, and finally Jaguar whispered, "Tiger is larger and wiser and more majestic than Jaguar."
Tiger gave Jaguar a shake, and Jaguar said, "Lion is larger, and wiser and more majestic than Jaguar."
Tiger let go, and offered to hunt with Jaguar. "You are my brother, and third largest, wisest and most majestic of all cats. That is something worthy of respect. Pride is breakable, but mend yours with that knowledge." Jaguar agreed this was so, and they hunted and ate together and then Tiger traveled home.
Jaguar boasted often, but now boasted that he was the third largest and wisest and most majestic of cats, and thus worthy of respect.
The monkeys and otters, for all their trouble, were still annoyed.
