Thelymitra ixioides

Thelymitra ixioides, the Dotted Sun-Orchid

Sun-Orchids get their name from the fact that they only open their flowers after receiving several hours of direct sunlight. The day we visited Langwarrin, the sun was in/out of the clouds all day, so only a fraction of the plants were open...

This was one of the first open flowers we saw:

Beautiful! What a thrill!

This species is reportedly highly variable in colour, and spotting. The blue colour in the photograph is ~true, with this particular flower having the slightest hint of pink or salmon tint.

(more to come!)
