Yanggao Wild Wall

Just outside of Yanggao is an un-restored ("wild') section of the Great Wall, separating the provinces of Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. The towers pictured here are almost all that remains of the structure itself, aside from a steep earthen ridge of dry, hardened clay. These towers once served as a warning system; fires would be lit atop of each to signal the coming of marauding Mongolians.

The cabbie who brought me here sang songs from his homeland for the entire hour-and-a-half (one-way) ride through rural villages and desert farmlands--all for US$7…and he wouldn't accept a tip!
