the lost main line says:
The 250,000 ton 'Supertanker' Esso Northumbria leaves the Tyne on her maiden voyage in 1969. She was the first of several such ships built at Swan Hunter, Wallsend. I think that may be sister ship Esso Hibernia on the slipway right background. by Colin Alexander

the lost main line says: I watched the Northumbria leave the Tyne from South Shields. Tens of thousands of people came to watch her go and all roads into the town were gridlocked. The giant tanker was an untried design built to carry oil from the Persian Gulf round the Cape of Good Hope after the closure of the Suez Canal following the six day war and she lasted little more than tens years before she was scrapped.
