Cocos (Keeling) Island

This remote Indian Ocean atoll could have been the intended destination of the lost Malaysian Boeing 777. Cocos used to be a refueling point for services from South Africa to Australia in the days before long range jets and the islands long runway would have been the perfect place to land the crippled jet. Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah had practiced landing on island airstrips on his flight simulator and would have known about Cocos's long runway. If MH370 was making for Cocos and overflew the island with the crew in an unresponsive state it would have come down on the Inmarsat arc to the north of the positions searched so far a long way from where the search is now being concentrated.
