My Time on the Christchurch Cattle Stop High Line.
If you are wondering, I'm only getting slightly more comfortable learning to fall off a high line each time I go out there. Instead of seizing up with complete anxiety that I don't trust the gear, I don't trust my skills, I don't want to die, and to top it off, I revert back to the hold my breath and force it mentality. I'm able to actually spend about 10 minutes out on the line each time calming my body and mind down. Now just to get up on my feet and finding balance, that is the next goal.
I am thankful that Brock Axthelm was kind enough to video this moment and show that while my physical body looks pretty calm, the internal doubt was raging quite a bit leading up to this moment. Resistance for me in these moments varies. I'll resist by taking photos, creating time lapses (I get on the line at the 1:09ish mark vimeo.com/153815805
), doing acro, going on hikes taking me miles away from the line. Pretty much anything other then getting on the line and breathing into the discomfort.
One thing this practice is making me consciously realize is the importance of feeling comfortable falling. Because without overcoming the fear of falling, doing anything else in the practice or in life is extremely constrictive to say the least.
My intent with this practice is to learn to balance and breathe and to truly quiet my mind, reaching a flow state while out on the highline. Leaning into the discomfort of the moment versus escaping from it. Ultimately to achieve that flow state not just on the line, but in life in general.
