The assignment - take out the lilac, and replace it with a quaking aspen.
The lilac was pretty, but it wasn't the nice big traditional fragrant kind, and it was starting to die back. Our neighbors have a big ash tree that provides our only shade in the back yard, and only after about 4:00, so our yard and house get pretty hot. With the threat of the ash borer thing, we worried that it would die eventually, so we planted the aspen to get our own shade.
