The old homestead

We loved this house! We lived here from 1999 to 2003, before the house where we live now. When we moved in, the outside was white stucco with white trim and really didn't show off the nice bungalow detailing, so we painted it this color scheme (not the blue metal, though - that was courtesy of a previous owner...). We even received a postcard from someone who drove by the house on the way to work every day who told us that the house always made them happy during their commute. :)

We did some research and found that the architect was J.W. Lindstrom, who also designed hotels in downtown Minneapolis and several of the houses in Tangletown, including the four on Minnehaha Parkway between Lyndale and Garfield and several on Garfield itself. During our research, we also were able to find copies of the house-plan books he published, which included the interior layouts and oftentimes an original photo of the house when it was built. It was really a fun time of discovery to see that old picture of our house when the maple tree in front just a small sapling. From that book we discovered that the covered porch was originally just an uncovered trelis.

Unfortunately we decided to move for a variety of reasons... Lyndale is just too busy a street and the house is what the realtors call a "unique property" - it didn't have a back yard because the garage that belongs to the house seen on the far right is actually attached to the back of this house. In the 1910s when they were built, our house belonged to a couple who built the neighboring house for their daughter, resulting in the unique property line arrangement. We put up the picket fence to help create some privacy in the front yard, too. It was a hard decision to move because the house had a really wonderful interior and layout...
