I'd totally forgotten about this one! Although the Small Blue at Bishop's Hill were a bit of a disappointment this year, the 350+ roosting Common Blue certainly weren't. I remember Dad and I doing the count on just the east facing side of the hill. Who knows how many there were over the entire site. Well over double that, i'd imagine. I estimate there were around 18-22 roosting on each plant whilst others were clustered together on single stems. This shot caught my eye as they were all lined up in the same plane of focus :) All males too, i believe. The middle one on the right hand side of the stem also has reduced markings - count the spots! Studying this image is really interesting as it shows just how much the markings and colours can vary on each specimen. The overall image is a bit dull but this was taken quite late in the evening when the cloud had come over (most of these shots were rather blurry except this one) but ive warmed the original up considerably and this is a much better representation of what i saw with my eyes. My camera's white balance isn't always very accurate in low light!
I know i said some hairstreak shots were on the way but im having trouble finding some decent ones. They all need a bit of work so i might try something else in the meantime.
Apologies if i randomly disappear for a week or so inbetween uploads. I'm in the middle of writing an article for the Warwickshire branch of Butterfly Conservation's annual magazine and unfortunately, i have a problem when it comes to not writing in too much detail. I reckon that by the time ive finished it, it'll be around 8 pages minimum. I'd like to think i can reduce the word count but i dont think im capable of cutting it by at least 6 pages, LOL! I hate having to be selective. My brain just cant process the idea of selectiveness :)
