For your fascinaton, this is the Gatwick Airport pond thing. If you look on google Earth or similar, you'll see a Y-shaped pond east of the airport; this is it.
I understand used for a multitude of purposes, so there are signs warning you not to swim in it, and its surrounded by chicken wire fencing. I'm told they use chemicals to defrost snow and ice, and these wash off the runways as a slurry, which ends up pumped in to here for later re-use. Seems very dry just now.
Despite its rather unsavoury uses, I did once see a cormorant diving in it, so I guess it can't be that bad? It appears to be nearly empty just now, I guess at this time of year more water is needed to keep the runways clear of ice.
That little tower is the water inlet. I'm not sure what the poles are for.
