Chateau de Castelnaud

The Medieval Castle of Castelnaud (13th century), as seen from the Dordogne river.

The chateau, a former Cathar stronghold, is first documented in the 13th century. It played an imprtant role in the hundred years war when it was used by the English forces to counter the nearby French stronghold of Beynac..

It is now an extremely popular tourist destination, having been fully restored and offering various demonstrations, re-enactments and a display of working replica seige weapons.

This photograph was taken from one of the tourist barges "Gabarres", which operate from the nearby town of "La Roque Gageac".
