Vespa velutina (f)

Another hazard on the French Riveria is the large number of Asian hornets. I saw them using the Nice fish market as a source of protein, on spurge flowers around the coast and on flowering ivies like this one in Cap Ferrat. They are curious about humans raising the risk of getting stung.

Asian hornets are quite different from the European hornet, having yellow (not brown) legs and an obvious orange band on the thorax. Their appetite for honey bees mean that they are regarded as a harmful invasive species in the UK. Identification information and links for reporting any sightings may be found at www.nationalbeeunit.com/diseases-and-pests/asian-hornet.
