Pararge xiphia

This is one of the threatened Madeira speckled wood butterflies and the only one I have seen in two visits to the island. It was photographed in the Blandy Estate, Palheiro Gardens, in Funchal.

Although the white spot on the leading edge of the forewing is poorly developed it can be identified because there are only two eye spots on the hindwing. The usual speckled wood has three or even four.
