Poecilobothrus nobilitatus (m)

A male semaphore fly on the garden patio. My wife had washed off a few pigeon deposits leaving about a dozen small pools of water. Within minutes each of these had been claimed by a male fly who started displaying. Females flitted from pool to pool and if impressed mated with the male. This was a half-second coupled flight that needed faster reactions than mine to photograph.

This has to be one of the most spectacularly coloured flies. I just hope I never have to try and pronounce its scientific name!!
