Syritta pipiens (m)
A male thick-legged hoverfly taking a short rest on a garden fern in between fights with all comers - even bees - on the thyme bush.
The swollen thighs make this quite an easy hoverfly to identify, but it's not the only species with this characteristic. To be sure grey dusting of the thorax sides (not well shown in this shot, but I have others) must also be present.
