Eristalis nemorum (f)
A hoverfly - common name according to iNat is orange-spined hoverfly - on an Aster flower in Bodnant Gardens.
The ID (independently verified) is based on the dark front/mid tarsi, strong face stripe and hind metatarsus thinner than the tibia. The stigmae (dark patches on the wing leading edge) are also a documented identifying criterion, being described as 'sharp' for this species. After looking through many photographs I can't tell 'sharp' from 'diffuse'!!
