Avocet in Transit

A small part of a huge (2-300) flock of avocet on the salt pans at Olhão. They were taking turns between feeding intently and flying in panic around the pans every time anything bigger than a sparrow flew over. A week on from this spectacle and there were maybe a dozen avocet on the pans. My conclusion was that the large flock were passage migrants refuelling.
