Fortress Fremantle 5.25in guns

Leighton Battery 5.25 inch gun emplacements

In 1944, the decision was made to replace the Leighton, South Fremantle and Point Peron batteries with 5.25-inch naval coastal artillery/anti-aircraft guns .

At Leighton, work commenced in May 1945 and the three gun battery was completed late 1947 and proof firing was carried in November that year. The guns remained in place until scrapped in 1963. Currently only one emplacement is accessible.

Although 5.25 inch dual purpose guns were planned for the defence of every major port in Australia, the Leighton Battery was the only one which actually became operational.

South Fremantle 5.25 inch emplacement

The installation of these guns at South Fremantle was limited to this one emplacement originally encased in earth but the installation was never completed

Point Peron battery

Point Peron battery conversion never commenced at all.

All up, eight such batteries were planned in Australia.
