Spiked Shieldbug with prey, Torntæge med bytte

Picromerus bidens (Pentatomidae)

A Spiked Shieldbug with some caterpillar. The first picture in a small series of three.

Like a leopard hauling an antilope up a tree this bug is struggling in the undergrowt. The caterpillar must weigh more than the bug itself but it doesn't seem to bother him the least! Actually when I returned to the scene of the crime the following day, he was sitting on another twig nearby! He had crawled what equals a kilometer in our scale, down this stem and up another all the time carrying more than his own body weight in his mouthparts - quite impressive!

Single shot, f/5.6, 1/15 sec, ISO200
