KTZ TEP33A-0082 Kyzyzhar train 117 for Kyzylorda. 3rd May 2025

Heading west along the A17 beyond Janaarka you will eventually come to the small dusty settlement of Kyzylzhar, which is situated by the railway about two kilometres south of the highway. Here the railway performs a dog leg to cross the Sarysu river. There are railway yards here also. This is because there is a junction here, a line heads north to the large opencast coal mine of Shubarkol. Kyzhylzhar is where the transfer to the main line happens. Shubarkol has TE10 on its books, we suspect that they still transfer the coal over the eighty kilometres or so to here. There is no such locomotive here though a coal train with a pair of TE33A up front sits in the yard. We don't have the time to spare to investigate, there are no hotels here either, to our knowledge anyway but we get lucky with one of the infrequent passenger trains.

TEP33A-0082 pulls out of Kyzylzhar in the direction of Zhezqazgan with train 117, Pavlodar to Kyzylorda, a journey time of just under 38 hours for just over 1400 kilometres. May the 3rd 2025.
