Vive le Tour.

This is for everyone but especially long-time flickr contact Pilar from Granada, Spain.

As the 2024 edition of the Tour de France came to a conclusion this last weekend, we discovered that we had both been at the 2006 race. Pilar posted several photos including this link taken during Stage 11 flic.kr/p/2q56rMi

My photo above was taken a day later, Bastille Day. It was a stiflingly hot day in Carcassonne and the photo shows the stage winner, Ukrainian Yaroslav Popovych. After 208kms, he is speeding around the last bend into the finishing straight.

Fast forward to 2024 and this was my 38th television Tour de France, highlights being watched each evening as our annual summer sporting treat. Congratulations to the winner Tadej Pogacar as well as Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel who also made the podium. Huge kudos also goes to Biniam Girmay, winner of the Green jersey composition, for finally putting African cycling on the map. Finally, double kudos to Mark Cavendish for becoming the cyclist with the most TdF stage wins ever, 35 of them. Fierce but friendly rivalry; blood, sweat and tears; lots of unfolding subplots plus fine Italian and French scenery all made it another excellent three weeks of racing.

The Tour de France remains one of the very few major sporting events that you can see for free and without tickets if you happen to be in the right place at the right time. Vive le Tour!
