20 years ago today.
It is one of those moments in life when I remember exactly where I was on hearing the shocking news that Space Shuttle Columbia had disintegrated over Texas during re-entry to Earth's atmosphere. I was at the Holiday Inn, London Heathrow, staying overnight for a departure early next morning.
Mission Commander Rick Husband died in the accident as did the other six crew members. A native son of Amarillo, the city's airport is now known as Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport. His statue looking up to the planets, stars and galaxies is prominently displayed in the departure area.
Quietly, I paid my respects.
