Marella Explorer

In answer to Lance's question from yesterday, this is what at least some of the previously 'redundant' cruise ships are now doing.......running cruises around the British Isles. In the distance you can see the ghost ship vessel from yesterday's post, P & O Ventura. That ship is now underway, currently leaving Weymouth Bay, destination Southampton.

In the foreground is TUI Marella Explorer, photographed in Portland harbour today. The vessel is on an 11-night cruise starting and finishing at Southampton, visiting places such as Liverpool and Holyhead. However, it seems that TUI's original itinerary has changed as the ship is currently sailing to an unscheduled stop at Dover and was never scheduled to visit Portland. I think it is possible they have had to miss out the Irish ports of Dublin and Cork?

Judging by the number of shore excursion coaches leaving the ship after breakfast towards Weymouth, there were quite a number of people on board. Sadly none were seen exploring the Isle of Portland itself. They missed out! Apart from a really interesting island, they may well have also seen two people carrying a greenhouse. Surely the highlight of any holiday!? But that story is for another day.
