Leat

Definition : A leat is an artificial channel that supplies water to a watermill.

This one is along the River Piddle at Affpuddle. It seems that every village along Dorset's River Piddle used to have a watermill to process grain. In this photo, the leat in the foreground powered a watermill behind the big tree to the right side. Out of sight in this photo, the mill buildings are now a private house. In the top middle of the photo is the River Piddle itself. Some water still flows through where the water wheel used to be. However, just beyond the tree, before the mill, most of the water cascades down to the river via an open sluice.

The photo is taken from the back of Affpuddle churchyard.
