The end of an era

Saturday Timewatch reflects British Airway's decision yesterday to retire their remaining 'jumbo' fleet with immediate effect. Regular viewers will already know that the 747 has been my lifelong favourite long-haul aircraft, whether operated by BA or any other airline. In fact my first ever "Queen of the Skies" flight was on a BOAC flight from New York JFK to London Heathrow LHR.

The photo above dates from 2008. It was taken at Manchester where BA jumbos were never common after the turn of the century. They usually arrived as a weather divert when Heathrow was snowed in. In this case it was a special flight from MAN to JFK carrying Prime Minister Gordon Brown from a Labour Party Conference in the city to a United Nations meeting in New York. The aircraft is G-CIVF, one of the fleet to have been 'retired' yesterday.
