The Fleet, Dorset.
Taken from above Abbotsbury, this view looks east towards the Isle of Portland. The Fleet is an 8 mile long lagoon, It is tidal in that the far end opens into Portland Harbour. However, as various fresh-water streams and ditches also feed into the lagoon, the water is brackish rather than salty. To the ocean side it is protected by an 18 mile long shingle barrier beach, usually known as Chesil Bank. Both Chesil and The Fleet are relatively wild places, largely difficult to access and also difficult to walk along once you are there. Fortunately both form a nature reserve, fairly well protected by assorted designations.
