The Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) is the smallest of the world's 13 otter species, known for its extreme dexterity, playfulness, and social nature. Found in Southeast Asia, this vulnerable species is facing increasing threats from habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade. Specialized paws: Unlike other otters that catch prey with their mouths, the Asian small-clawed otter uses its highly sensitive, partially webbed front paws to forage for food.
Tiny claws: As its name suggests, this otter has very short, blunt claws that don't extend past its digital pads, giving it a great sense of touch for feeling for prey in muddy riverbanks and crevices.
Varied diet: They mainly eat crustaceans like crabs, shrimp, and shellfish, along with insects, snails, frogs, and small fish. They will even leave shellfish in the sun to help them open up.
