music box top down view (in Explore)
Top down view of a Thorens disc music box showing the spring motor on the right side, a removable music disc and the musical keys on the left side. The music disc is actually a gea that is driven by the spring motor and rotates above the musical keys which are triggered by "fingers" that project below the disk (seen in cross section) in previous image). The movement is mounted to a wooden soundboard that fits vertically into wooden clock case.
From a technical point, I think it is interesting how the notes are mapped onto a disk that rotates at a constant speed, but traverses a linear set of "keys". The timing and duration of each note/key needs to be correctly located on circles of different diameter on the disk. In my mind, quite a fete.
Shot with three off-camera strobes (Godox ad200Pro/XPro II L trigger). Flash A bare bulb, mounted overhead, bounced off a 32 inch white umbrella. Flash B round head, modified with snoot fully extended, camera right, position to illuminate interior of mechanism. Flash C modified with MagMod MagSphere, behind velum scrim.
