American hazelnut catkins (in Explore)

After the ice storm of February 22, 2023.

 

These catkins are the male flower of the hazelnut shrub. These form in the autumn and begin to extend and loosen in the spring, releasing pollen before the leaves emerge. The catkins are approximately 1-1.5 inches in length.
