Otto Berkeley
Nocturne
It lacks the clean, modern finish of the nearby Crossrail tunnel, but there's still a futuristic atmosphere inside Poplar Station's footbridge that makes it a delight to photograph.
I last visited the location on a bleak February morning, when the harsh light coming through the glass allowed me to play up the tunnel's gritty and washed-out qualities. For this shoot, I thought it would be fun to visit on a warm late-summer evening to see how the location's personality changed once the outside of the tunnel had faded away and the lights inside the tunnel had been switched on.
The editing phase for the image was straightforward but time-consuming. I shifted the colour balance towards cooler tones, using darker exposures to tone down the scene outside the tunnel and to control the intensity of the lights inside the tunnel, and then blending these with brighter exposures to emphasise the texture along the walkway. After that, I played up some of the reflected light along the tunnel's arches and adjusted portions of the shadows by dodging and burning the image, at the same time remaining very selective about where I applied contrast so as to produce a slightly softer and more surreal finish to the location.
