The last few

It became apparent at the end of 1991 that the P&W was looking for additional motive power. The MLW and GE fleet was tired and traffic was growing at a rapid rate. Rumors circulated that soon the P&W would be taking over trackage in Connecticut between Danbury and New Haven. This certainly meant that the M-420's were on borrowed time. During the early 90's, the only chance we would have to see a daylight run on the Gardner branch was with the Sunday Worcester extra. After switching out interchange from Conrail and setting up the containers yards at Wiser Ave and Southbridge St in Worcester, they would usually head north to the B&M interchange with a handful of cars. At the end of a long day switching, the Sunday Worcester extra has crossed Sunnyside St. in Holden,MA with M-420 2003 and U18B 1801, 2 of the last 3 engines painted in the "parallelogram" scheme.
