The Replacements

In late 1992, the Providence & Worcester's fleet of MLW M-420's very worn out and tired. They served the railroad well since their purchase from MLW in February and April of 1975. The railroad was growing fast with expansion and new aggregate business in Connecticut. Working with Conrail and it's Juniata rebuild shop in Altoona, PA, the P&W traded it's 5 MLW's for a fleet of used rebuilt GE U23B's of Conrail heritage. On it's first day of service, former Conrail U23B 2792, now Providence & Worcester 2202 leads train WX-3 through downtown Worcester, MA on it's way to the Springfield Terminal interchange at Gardner, MA on February 2, 1993. The 2202 was the first of what would become the backbone of the P&W's GE fleet, eventually numbering 10, 2202-2211.
