Cu Chi Tunnels

The Cu Chi Tunnels made up an elaborate tunnel network around the village of Cu Chi, which was a Viet Cong stronghold. Throughout the Vietnam War, neither the Americans nor the French before them were able to take over the area, which was only 30 kilometers outside of Saigon. The tunnels made possible communication and coordination between the VC-controlled enclaves, isolated from each other by South Vietnamese and American land and air operations. They also allowed the VC to mount surprise attacks wherever the tunnels were -- even within the perimeter of US military bases. The US military carpet-bombed and sprayed the area with napalm and agent Orange repeatedly, to no avail (the famous photo of the naked Vietnamese girl running from a napalm attack was from this area).
