Ask a lawyer with Mike Dyer

Hi, Steve Sleeper here. I’m with motorcycle personal injury lawyer Omaha Mike Dyer. Mike, I know there’s a certain thrill and freedom, and I haven’t met too many bikers that aren’t safe about what they’re doing. But being on a motorcycle; it’s different than being in a car. With a motorcycle accident, there are things one needs to be thinking about to make sure they are taken care of, right?

[Mike] Sure. If you’re on a motorcycle, most people are not seeing you. Drivers need to look twice look for motorcycles.

I’m thinking of a nice couple I went to see because they were in body casts. A car pulled out in front of them at 30 miles an hour and they went from 30 to 0 and had very severe injuries. The kind of injuries you’re going to get on a motorcycle; they’re usually not minimal. Either you’re not hurt or you’re hurt severely.

The one thing motorcyclists don’t appreciate is how much insurance they need to have because the person who hits them may not have enough insurance or no insurance. They can be stuck with all the bills. Let’s say the car driver has minimal $25,000 coverage, and your motorcycle coverage is only $25,000 or $50,000. If you have a body cast, and you’ve had 6 surgeries to put screws in, to put your body back together, that bill is $80,000. You don’t have enough money to pay your medical bills, never mind all the time you’re going to have lost from work, all the pain you’ve endured, all the permanent impairments and restrictions you’re going to have.
