Flat Iron Fire, March 11, 1948

"Flat Iron Building (Urbana)--Fire, 1948" Photographs Envelope, Champaign County Historical Archives, Urbana, IL.

Between 1906 and 1948, the fork of Main Street and Springfield in downtown Urbana was occupied by a prominent building called the Flat Iron.

The Flat Iron was built in 1906 at 302 West Springfield Avenue in Urbana. The architect was Joseph W. Royer. It was the tallest building in Urbana at the time. Over the years it housed the Elks lodge, law offices, the Veterans administration office, Illinois Department of Public Welfare, and the Flat Iron department store.
